Odometer Repair Questions

Hello,
I hope I'm posting in the correct place (I have a 2000 Honda Civic). My odometer has been stuck on the 20 m.p.h. for a few months. Once in awhile it will swing back into action, and other times it will pull back down to 20 and stick there. I'm wanting to get if fixed but I have a few concerns. (1.) How much would a repair like this cost? (2.) The Honda dealers are sometimes inflated when it comes to pricing and I'm wondering if a place like Car-X could fix it.

Any information and advice is greatly appreciated.

well, first off, that's a speedometer, the odometer is what counts how many miles you have on the car.

There are three things that can go wrong, the sending unit can go bad, the guage cluster might be fualty or a realy may be bad. Depending on what it is will setermine the cost of the repair. I'm not sure how much it costs on a civic, but on my friends legend he was quoted $800 by the Acura dealer and $120 buy a small shop. The best thing to do is take to the Acura dealer to get it diagnosed as what it is, then take some where else to do the work. On this type of thing you really need to shop around, and don't forget to ask what happens if this doesn't fix the problem because it is possible they fix the wrong thing.

Here something interesting:

Make: HONDA
Model: CIVIC
Year: 2000
Type: PASSENGER CAR
Service Bulletin Number: 405
NHTSA Item Number: 10016353
Summary Description:
TRANSFERRING ODOMETER MILEAGE AT ODOMETER R&R. *TT

Print this out and take it to the dealer. Maybe if you're good you can get them to fix it for free or low cost
