Racing seats/SRS light....a different problem than the usual

A few months ago my SRS light went off for no reason at all. I have had racing seats in my car for years with no problems, but all of a sudden my car is throwing the SRS code. I took it to Honda and they said that my ECU was bad, so they replaced it today because if was covered under warranty. But the SRS light still will not turn off.

Now they are saying that it is because of the aftermarket seats. The "claim" that they honda factory seats have sensors in them. I think this is bull$hit because when I took the seat out, the only thing that was on the seat was the seatbelt buckle. When i swapped the buckle over to the new seat, I moved every thing on the seat to the new one. I do not believe there is a sensor inside the seat because there are no wires or anything sticking out of the seat that would warrant this argument.

Is honda right? Or are they just giving me $hit about it? Yes I know that there is an SRS reset procedure, but honda claimed they can reset it with the computer instead of the procedure that is posted on this site. Is this true? Or should I do the SRS reset to see if they are correct?

tony_buttons is an unknown quantity at this point
I'd say try the reset I dont see how it could hurt... but I dont see how there would be a sensor in the seat itself either... I also kept the seat belt thingamajiggy when I changed seats and I havent seen any srs light. Maybe something got wiggled and you lost the connection momentarily if you were under the seat for any reason. Anyway you know how it doesn't come back on until you reset it. You didnt replace the steering wheel did you?

you know, I still feel that honda employees technicians with no or very little experience in the auto industry. I have heard lots of people who have taken there cars to honda for work and honda seems to either throw parts at it or doesnt know what the problem is. I have had the same issue with them, I took it in for warranty cause my window would roll up slow and they replaced the window regulator and I get the car back with the same problem and when I looked up and found the TSB for the window sash being misadjusted, I found that to be the actual problem and fixed it in 5 minutes.

But anyway, I say this because if they thought that your seats were the problem, then why did they replace the ECU? Anyway yes try and reset the light yourself and if it still stays on, find out what the code is and I or someone else can look it up in our manaul and see if we can help you with this issue.

Now you did say that the light just came on for no reason correct? Or had it been on, then gone off and came back on again? You may just have a regular SRS problem. Now honda can reset the light there diagnostic equipment, I think the reset procedure on here is just for people that dont have those kinds of equipment. BTW, I am going to move this to the vehicle issues forum, you may get more answers there.

The honda tech told me that the code that was thrown was one that meant the ECU was bad. He said this happened all of the time in the 97 accords.

I had my racing seats in for a long long time. I didn't change anything when one day I noticed the light was on. I am frustrated because I feel that they are just willing to write my problem off using my seats as an excuse to not do their job. The guy kept telling me that my factory seats have sensors in them when I know they don't. I have a good mind to just take my stock seat up there and show him that I know more about honda's than he does.

Well I dont have alot of experience with SRS units, but according to the manaul, if you have side air bags, then you will have sensors in the seats, but if you dont, then you wont.

Ok well I can tell you that the 03's (purely because I have one) DOES in fact have 2 sensors on the bottom of the seat. Now it the ignition is turned on in ANY WAY without these plugged it it will throw a code. The code is cleared by jumping to pins on the orange plug under the dash. However, certain components (like that seatbelt plug) are covered as long as you own the vehicle. If THAT is the problem, it doesn't matter how many miles are on the car, Honda will replace it free of charge. the downside to this is that having Honda look at it will cost $90. If the belt is the issue, you pay nothing. If it isn't the issue that $90 gets applied toward the repair of whatever the issue is.
