weird sh!t gas cap won't open stretched cable

weird **** gas cap won't open stretched cable
SO as the title says.. my gas cap woundl't open at the gas station... i was running on empty.. So i mess around and undo the carpet up the sides of the trunk and turn the cable where it connects to the gas cap latch and open (meanwhile veryone in the gas station is starring wondering what the hell im doing) So I get home and take out the paneling where the lever to the gas cap/ trunk is and I see the the cable is stretched out.. it no longer connects to the gas cap latch in the trunk... it was also rusty.. isnt that weird/strange/unusal? any thoughts as to why?

mine sticks i have an 04 and sicne ig ot it. i have to hold the fawking switch down and wait.. annnnd wait and then it pops open
during the winter i had to have the guy hold it down while i pried it open with a key cause it stuck
i thinkt he grease they have on the door hinge blows.
