Funny Plastic Smell from Undercarriage.

Cause for concern ... maybe.

Anyway, last Thursday my brother was driving my 01 EX Coupe home when all of a sudden we see a large plastic table cover in the middle of the road. Instead of using common sense and driving around the table cover my brother decides to drive right over it, thinking that the undercarriage would be fine. Well it wasn't. The table cover got caught under the car and stuck along for the ride until we pulled up to our house and I yanked it out.

It was late that night so I didn't notice any pieces of plastic stuck or melted onto the exhaust pipe. But the next day on my way to work I notice white smoke coming under the passenger's side of the car, needless to say I was pissed. I took a look at the exhaust pipe again and noticed that it had melted plastic all over it from the night before. The smoke eventually stopped but the burning smell continues to linger. The longer I drive the more noticeable it gets.

I was wondering now almost a week after would I need to be worried about replacing the entire exhaust pipe or are my worries unwarranted and the plastic should melt away?

we see this all the time at my work. the techs just sand the area where the plastic melted to the car. Takes car of the smell. No need to replace the piping.

Cool. I'll get right on sanding the plastic right off. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah I had a plastic bag stick to my exhaust last summer and the smell lingered for about 2 weeks.

This happened to me two weeks ago. Freakin plastic bag. I'm waiting for 3,000 more miles to change my oil and tranny fluid then I'll sand down any remaining plastic. Smell kinda went away but it still there.
