grabbin my mandarin chicken salad and a nice baked potato on a wintry day...i had the defrost on slight high but warm on my front windshield. so I'm at the drive thru, waiting to get my food and all ofa sudden i hear a **crrrraaacccckkk** im like wtf did someone throw a rock at my car or sumthin..and right there smack dab on the bottom portion of my windshield is huge long crack going across.. now this is my question. Is it possible this happened as a result of the cold air outside getting in touch with the heated defroster on the windshield? has this ever happened to any of you before and if so.. do you know in general how much this may cost? thanks!

yes, once you have a crack in your windshield your not supposed to use your dash heaters. The heat will make the glass expand and the crack will run all the way to the other side of the glass, if your not carefull.
hum my parents had a chip in there highlander for a whole winter a huge chip and the start of fishers(speling) they always crank up the heat and they had no problems
but ya i could see how hot air +cold with a crack would make it worse.

anyone know how much to replace the rear windshield btw?
like they do charge more 'cause there are heater wires back there?
back to the topic... i think you have to a crack that's decently deep into the windowshield to have it keep on expanding. a rock chip won't make it crack, i don't think.

Take it to Honda and tell them the truth... that windshield is suppose to be tempered, meaning its not suppose to crack when subjected to hot or cold temps. Kinda like Pyrex shiz..
i doubt it was caused by hot/cold stress...
there's a TSB about something causing the windshield to crack. if your windshield cracked (i think near the lower corners), and nothing actually hit the windshield, honda may decide to fix your car for free.

I agree, take it to honda and tell them to fix it UNDER WARRANTY!!! I dont remember the manual saying anything about not using your heater when its cold outside. Aslo tell them your car is unsafe to drive with a crack in your windshield and you dont feel comfortable driving until they get it repaired. Aslo tell them they are lucky that windshield broke at Wendys instead of in a collision where a glass shard could have made you blind and make you have to colllect unemployment and live in a Project Houseing developement the rest of your life because the windshield was shitty!
All Im saying is I that I think the windshield was defective and should not have broken frum running the defrost. They should replace it in my opinion.

There was a TSB on it from 2001. Unfortunatley I don't have the TSB, just the number and title:
An uneven flange surface may lead to cracks in the windshield at the lower corner (01-091, October 23, 2001)

Found it, and added it to my TSB page. http://www.geocities.com/pfeifferper...Is_Cracked.pdf
the front civic windsheild is extremely weak in certain areas, most noticebly in front of the driver near the defrost vent. I had a tiny, and i mean miniscule pebble hit my windshield at about 40 mph, i had the defroster on warm it was about 30 outside, then blam instant crack. one week later the crack had traveled from the drivers side all the way to the passenger side. but it only cost 10 bucks to get a new windshield. use the promo companys that call your house or have a special, then find out if your insurance lists them as a preferred company, and youll only be out a few bucks. I was in the process of changing insurance companies anyway so i did it on the last day of the old policy.
