Thunking Sound
Thunking Sound
Hey guys I just recently bought a 05 Civic Ex, and almost immediately put the 22mm Integra Type R sway bar on in. It handles like a dream but I have this weird problem now. I get this hollow loud thunking sound everytime I take a fast turn I have no idea what it is, initially I thought it was the little tool kit flying around in the trunk cuz the trunk is hollow and I figured could make the sound. So I took it out and did some fast turns and the thunking sound continued. The endlinks aren't broken they seem fine, and there seems to be no clearance issue with the sway bar. I really have no idea what it is. Can someone help? I'm really afraid I'm damaging my car and its not even a week old. Thanks
P.s. I know the sway isn't installed backwards cuz I installed it backwards the first time, check to see if it was installed backwards and it was. I knew it was backwards because when i sat on the trunk the suspension arm would come up and touch the bar. Therefore I many people say its the exhaust hitting my sway bar, but I don't see how a stock exhaust doesn't clear.

In that second pic, is that the swaybar on top of the muffler? Looks kinda close? If your grab the end of the tailpipe and give it a good wiggle does it hit anything? How are the endlinks? When I installed my RSX swaybar, I didnt like the angle that it put the endlinks at so I didnt install it.
The second pic is from though the rims of the car and the first one is from under the car...Im gunna go tinker under the car and see what I can do. I'll post what I find out in awhile. Thanks for the response flotsamm.

OK took a look under the car, everything is on tight and I don't see any clearance issues. Float I did give it a good wiggle and i didn't manage to even come close to the sway bar. Wheres a good inch where the sway bar goes under the exhaust tubing and a good quater inch when the sway bar curves and goes past the exhaust canister to the other side of the car. I figured since I'm making fast turns it might not be only a wiggle that causes the banging sound, I figure more than likely i'm compressing the rear right spring which causes the clearence to lessen and the exhaust to bang against the sway bar. Thats what I think...seems to only happen when I go over bumps to fast, or make fast left handers. TIme to make a trip to the exhaust shop. Hopefully this will fix the problem. Thanks everyone!
Crap so now I don't think its hitting the exhaust piping. Tried to simulate what was happening last nite today but I couldn't find a clear road to take a fast enough turn. I got home and I had my dad start pumping the rear end suspension like crazy pushing it up and down. While I was under looking at the exhaust pipe and the sway and it doesn't move. They don't even come close. I really have no idea what this loud noise is...

i'm sure its the exhaust hitting the sway bar. i know you said you see that its not hitting the exhaust, but when you jack up the car the exhaust and swaybar actually get farther away from each other (its not settled). same thing happened to me when i got my rsx sway bar installed. but, i have the 19mm swaybar and an exhaust. i think the 22mm might be too thick. i figure that the difference in our swaybars (19mm and 22mm) plus my aftermarket exhaust or your extra 3mm thick bar equals the same thing... the swaybar hitting the exhaust. you might have to take ur car to an exhaust shop to get the exhaust re-angled to fix the problem. thats waht happen to me...
