Exclamation Tranny Problem?

I think my tranny is having problems. Sometimes when I shift into 2nd gear it pops out. WTF is going on. It rarely happens but it scares me a lot. Anyone have any idea what the problem may be. I'm taking it to Honda on Monday.

Pops out... without your hand on the shifter?
I have heard of this being a problem with some of the 2k1 civics.

IBTM also.

In before the move to vehicle issues forum. This is a known problem and should be under warranty or tsb.

honestly, it all depends on the dealer, I doubt it though. That wouldnt directly affect your tranny in any way. If they do, tell them to shove it.

I will put as much as stock parts back as possible. Before I had some problem with my light they were bithing about my aftermarket stuff and won't fix it under warrenty. End up paying $300 to fix at a shop.

Ok, i'm just worried that if I don't get it fixed soon it will really mess up my transmission. I heard some dealership stories consisting of voiding the warranty. Maybe I'm just paranoid. Thanks a lot for the info, I appreciate it. I'm sure glad I found this site.

even if it really messed it up, your warranty will cover it. So dont stress about it.

Well can I ask why you didnt get a warranty with your used car? Even if you didnt buy it at honda, you should get an extended warranty. And the car should come with some type of limited warranty I hope.

And yes you would have to pay if you have no warranty.

What year is your car? You may have some factory warranty left. My girlfriend's used 2001 civic had the balance of the 100,000km power train, they rebuilt her tranny for free. Take the TBS sheet with you. They know about this problem.

Yes the factory warranty will cover it, it's transferable through owners. Like I said before, my girlfriend had her's rebuilt from honda and her car is a used 2001, bought this year. You just have to make sure you still have warranty left. 4 year/ 100,000 km over here in Ontario. Yes this will damage your tranny everytime it pops/grinds out of gear. The gear teeth are sharp, everytime they pop out they get rounded.

Well it all depends on how many miles you have? And what warranty? If you have the powertrain warranty, then yes it will be covered.

I had a 2K1 with 28K on the odometer when it started popping out of second gear. After a while it started popping out of 5th too. TOok it to the dealer and shift cables need to be replaced. It was covered under warranty. It did take about 6 weeks to get the cables in so be prepared for a wait

Yes, my '04 does this. About 20% of the time in reverse, just under 5% of the time in 2nd & 3rd. I think the problem is crappy syncros. There are times when the tranny just won't go into reverse all the way without first shifting into a forward gear. It will
go in far enough so that you *think* it's in gear, when it's really only partially engaged. I have a similar problem with 2&3 in that it's easy to get a partial engagement. Sometimes when you shift into 2 or 3 you need to apply a little more pressure to make sure it engages the rest of the way (almost like a dual engagement). As a result, shifting into 2nd&3rd is not a standard movement. You need to give it a little more umph after the initial engagement to make sure you get it fully engaged. Bottom line is that you can't have a clean, standard movement for shifting the car or it will pop out of gear on you at times. Generally, it's a smooth tranny, but it can behave in a very rude manner at times. Our '95 did this too. I had hoped that they would have fixed it over the past decade, but, they didn't.

Has anyone figured out how to down shift into first while the car is moving? This is the most anoying tranny quirk. You approach a red light, you're slowing down to 5mph or less, the light turns green, and you want to down shift into first and go. I don't think God could shift my car into first without coming to a full stop. The shifter just won't budge when moving it towards first.

^^^ Jeez.... rev-match the engine and pop it in first. If you know how much to tap the gas when you shift it'll slide right in. Takes a bit of practice.

I always rev match. Works well in most other cars, but, not for first gear in either of the Civics I've owned. I've even tried a true double clutch (Depress Clutch, shift out
of 2nd into neutral, release clutch, depress clutch, rev match, try to move shifter
into first, won't budge, curse). I know the tranny will last forever (although my
'95 had a throwout bearing seize at 70K making for one very challenging drive home); one just has to live with it's downright quirky behavior.

Did you drive your car hard or something? I still dont understand how trannies can go that fast. Not to mention piston rings. Sounds like you raced it or something.
