Reverse gear doesnt have a synchro like the forward gears. So like Boilermaker1 said, putting it in a forward gear first synchs up the gears which in turn makes it easier to go into reverse. The owners manual talks about this I think..

those Honda ppl will scam ya... I either put it in 4th or 3rd when the shifter doesnt get into 1st or reverse... it happens... my dad said something about a "shift gate".... dont really know.. but it will free up after moving it into 4th or 3rd
You can even put it in any gear before engaging reverse and it will go smoothly.
Its also smoother to engage reverse when you keep your clutch depress (with the brake pedal depressed as well) from coming into any forward gears and go to reverse right away. As opposed to depressing the clutch (and brake), neutral, then reverse.
If you think Honda's tranny is a PITA, wait til you get to own a Subaru 5-spd
