Question Noise from engine compartment

I have an 03 civic MT, about a week ago i noticed a noise coming from the engine compartment. It would get louder as the engine revs. Yesterday i had my brother take a look at it with me and it seems to be coming from the alternator? If not its something real close. My brother seems to thinks the alternator bearings are going bad. Anyone have something similar happen? I have an appointment at the dealer on monday, but im going to try to get in tomorrow.

hard to describe, sort of like the sound of sticking something into a fan i guess. Sometimes it will go away for a few mins, but it always comes back, and like i said it gets louder as i rev the engine.

i took my car to the dealer yesterday to fix this issue along with a rattle and an oil change. They fixed the rattle that was coming from the passenger side headliner, but did not fix the engine noise, they supposedly adjusted the belts is what the invoice says. So i made another app for thursday, im getting a loaner car and im not picking my car up until that noise is gone!

That noise is the ENGINE.....

Naww, serously, do you still have the stock air box? Could it be the "broken plastic piece" problem? Maybe rattling around in there???
I can't think of a lot of things that would rattle in the engine. Maybe the heatshield on the manifold too.

its not really a rattle, my brother and I think its the bearings going bad in either the power steering or alternator. It gets louder as i rev the engine

I had the same rattle from my passenger side headliner. As for the engine rattle I don't know if it is the same, but I have a slight rattle when I am comming down from higher rpms if I rev it up from an idle. Don't think it is anything serious though

JohnD, If you think it's a bearing, I'd bet on the alternator. Easy way to test. Remove the belt, start the engine (only for a moment) rev it up and down and listen. If it's quiet, it's a bearing on the pump or alternator. You can also then turn each by hand and listen for roughness. BTW, since the waterpump is driven by the timing belt, you won't heat up the motor, so don't worry. BUT if the sound is still there, it could be the waterpump, or the timing belt tensioner. Unlikely, but possible. How many miles??

if it is a elctrical whinning/rattle noise and it sounds like it comes form the area alt or pump. it is most likely the alt. I just had mine replace for a fat price of $452 (part and labor) at the dealer.

Just dropped it off at the dealer, a mechanic came out and wanted to go for a ride with me to duplicate the noise so they know exactly what they are looking for. And guess what, it would NOT do it, its been doing it for 3 weeks now and when i go to show him it wont do it. well we get back to the dealer, and i was leaving it for them to look further into it. They would not give me a loaner car because i did not buy the car from their dealership(I bought the car about 30 mins away, I didnt like this places sales dept. but they have a good service dept) So they have the same mechanic that i was driving around with drive with me to my work and he was going to drive it back to the dealership, and thankfully soon as i start the car it was making that noise! The mechanic got out and popped the hood, so atleast now they heard it and can hopefully troubleshoot it!

Picked up the car yesterday after work and they tracked the noise to the power steering pump. They ordered me a new one, and im getting it put in next friday.

On a side note, i was planning on putting in my hayame coilovers this weekend, but im thinking of waiting until i guess this warranty work finished. Would i have any dealership issues with them installed where they wont warranty parts?

I have a sound that comes on when I stop the car, when the cooling fan is starting. Lasts about 1/2 second.

Does anybody post here anymore? Like, I posted on another forum in 7thgencivic, and there's this 03 civic ex sedan w/ 53000 miles that I am interested in. There is a rattling sound somewhere in the right part of the engine compartment. At low rpm, the rattling noise is pretty loud. When rpm goes up, the rattling isn't as loud, but you can hear that there's an extra noise from the engine compartment.

Hm... Haven't really talked to dealer yet coz I am trying to get the money to buy it.

John D, is this the same problem you had?

that sounds similar to my problem. With mine i would hear it while idling and when i press the gas slowly the noise would get much louder. Ended up being the alternator. There is a TSB on this issue where the belt tensioner or something is set to tightly from the factory forcing the bearings to go bad. If its coming from the driver side area near the alt. thats most likely your issue i would think.

Yea, it's coming from the driver side... Not too sure where the location is again coz the last time I test drove the car was a month ago. I'll go check it out. Thanks a lot.
