Angry Help My Civic is Vibrating like Crazy.

So I hadn't driven my fiance's 02 Civic EX in a couple of weeks so when I started it up it was vibrating like crazy. I calle her and asked her how long it had been shaking like that, she couldn't remember when it started. So when I got home I check all of the connections on the intake. Then I noticed this huge dent in the exhaust manifold. Then I check under the car and there were dents on the exhaust all the way down the car. I so happens that she remembers running over a large rock on the way home one night.

Does anybody have a idea of what is making it shake so bad. Could be Header, motor mounts, O2 Sensor, or somekind of sensor. It only shakes like 90% of the time when at idle. Any info would be great. My next step is to reinstall the stock air box and take it to the dealer to find out what's wrong. Of course I will do all the work myself.

Thanks

ya, take it to the dealer and ask them what's wrong, but DO NOT get it done there unless you like paying way too much. Either do it yourself or take it to a muffler shop. At least that's what it sounds like to me. If a motor mount is broken the engine will start rocking on idle, pop the hood start it up and take a look. Sensors will not make the car idle badly, at least in this case (sounds like). The exhaust itself might be loose, which is what I think it could be.

Sounds good I'll jack it up tomorrow and check all of the connections. I do almost all the work myself on my cars. Mechanics are too expensive.

Thanks,
Diggin

The Civic or the RSX. Luckily she can't drive a stick, so the RSX is safe for now. She's got a real heavy foot. She want's some more GO for her ride, I just haven't figured out what to do for her car yet. Any suggestions.

i think it's your midpipe hitting the bottom of your car. is it shaking like crazy underneath like the passenger floor to around the ebrake area??? if it is...i think it might be ur exhaust piping.

pdubbz3for10, I don't think it's the mid-pipe because it's not really a banging. It's the engine it's self that is vibrating. When idling the whole car is shaking, if you lean your head back on the head rest your eyes shake. It shakes bad enough that when you pop the hood and place the hood holder up you can see it shaking.

So I believe it's something closer to the motor. I still need to check the header a little better and probably the plugs even though it doesn't seem to be hesitating.

check the down pipe and make sure that it is properly tightened down and that there is tension in the springs on the spring bolts. They can get loose and cause exactly what you are talking about. It happened to me once and freaked me out. I thought it was a mount but when I jacked it up I saw one of the springs on the spring bolts loose and fixed it.

It looks like I'm going to be off this weekend, so I'll actually get to do some work on it this weekend on it. If I can just keep her from driving it. I might make her drive my 92 integra for a day or so since it hasn't had no loving since we got the 2 new cars. It's for sale if anyones interested.

Peace

if the dents on the exhaust manifold and pipes are severe to restrict exhaust flow then the engine is choking.

can't vent the exhaust properly thus backpressure is building up... and exhaust aren't flowing out correctly...

you should notice greatly decreased performance and mileage along with the heavy idle....

or I could be wrong.

but i think that is whats going on.

but yeah the bolts from the manifold to the downpipe could be loose too.. if its enough to make dents... something could be loose and as the exhaust is flowing out the pipes are banging together...

but what you describe seems more like an engine vibration... for the hood to be shaking too....

anyway just take a look at it more.

The dent is on the downpipe right on the 1st bend from the exhaust manifold. It's like 1.25" wide and almost dented in like an 1". I peeked under the car yesterday a little at the manifold and downpipe connection, didn't look loose but I couldn't do much because it was hot. It could be a combination of both loose connection and exhaust restriction. I guess I could just take the downpipe and cat off to see. Hehehehe.

Is the B-pipe and downpipe the same thing or is the B-pipe after the cat.

Thanks Guys

So I looked under the Civic today to check the exhaust. So I unbolted the B-piped from the EM and resecured it. Doing that helped a little bit but it still vibrates. I beleive CapYoda is right about the dent restricting the air flow. I'm going to have to figure out if I can knock it back out or just pick up a new one or get one from a junk yard.
