Intermittent problem with electrics cutting but car restarts
Hi,
I hope I have posted this in the correct area in this forum. Apologies if not!
Does anyone have any idea where to start with a problem I am having with my Civic? It is a 2015 petrol / manual / 1.8.
Twice in the past week when driving the electrics have cut out. The engine stops and all lights go out on the dashboard - it is as if I have just turned it off at the key. Hence the power steering also goes. On both occasions, I managed to get it to roll to the side of the road.
I turned the key off and back on again and it restarted straight away and got me home ok without any further issues.
No warning lights etc showed up on the dashboard.
The battery is about 3 years old and the local garage I use for servicing checked it and said it was ok.
I have checked obvious things like earth and battery straps are tight.
I have spoken to a few independent Honda specialists locally and they had no idea and had not come across this before and suggested booking it into a Honda dealership for diagnostics.
So I have done this for a couple of weeks away - the earliest booking available. But they have quoted me £145 an hour for an investigation. They were quite vague as to what this involved which does not inspire me.
I have also spoken to local auto electricians, but they said it would need to fail completely before they could look for a problem.
It may be related, but when driving the engine seems to hunt a little i.e. speed up and slow down. But this is very subtle - hardly noticeable, but it is there.
If anyone has any ideas what it could be or how to start investigating etc it would be greatly appreciated.
My wife needs the car on motorway journeys and as it stands it is not safe to drive.
Thanks in advance - Ian
