Low Power: Check Emissions System, VSA System & Power Steering System [solved]

2013 Civic: Check Emission/Check VSA/Check Power Steering sytem lights all came on. The Engine is running rough with very little power. I hooked up my OBD2 reader but it displayed “ERROR” on it after attempting to read the codes. so I cannot read any codes. The OBD2 reader is getting power when I connect it and it attempts to read the codes but it errors out. I tried the OBD2 reader on another vehicle and it worked fine.

I removed the battery cables to try and reset anything but that didn’t work.

The battery is showing 12.4v off and 14.4v while running.

I checked all of the fuses for continuity and didn’t find any bad fuses.

I live out in the country in a hilly area so I don’t think it has enough power for me to drive it to a shop or to an auto parts store to have them try and read the codes.

Any idea what I can check before I have to get it towed?

Thanks

have a battery charger? try a recharge
low electrical power causes the Christmas tree light up on the dash
otherwise, shorts somewhere?
The ECU... might not be healthy to not read codes... (common on 7th gen cars, never heard about it on the 9th gen...

FIXED IT:

I put in a new battery but no change.
As a last report I went and bought a new OBD2 reader and the new one was able to read the codes. Problem was a bad #4 coil. I replaced it and car runs fine now. My old OBD2 reader was at least 10 yrs old but I am stil not sure why it wouldn’t read the codes.

Oh well

I posted too soon. I started the car this morning and got the same code P0354.

I swapped coils between coil 1 and 4 but the error stayed as P0354.

runs rough again.

Here's some troubleshooting for the fault. For a 2006 Civic but should be very similar to yours.

I found the problem. One wire on the 4th coil was totally broken and the one next to it had the wire partially exposed.
