Premature brake pad wear?

I have a 2008 Honda Civic LX 4 door automatic transmission. I installed new front brake pads on May 31, 2019. I had 82,800 miles. Last month I noticed a squeak/squeal when I was braking. This past weekend I checked my front drivers side brake pads, and they are wearing down, and the squealer/sensor must be making the noise. I have 101,800 miles on my car today. Does this seem like preamature brake pad wear? I figured they would last at least double the amount. It's been less than 20,000 miles. I'm not an agressive driver and don't speed up to stop signs/traffic lights and slam on my brakes. Here are the brake pads I have on my car: Carquest Wearever Platinum Professional Ceramic Brake Pads - Front (4-Pad Set) Part # PXD465AH LIMITED LIFETIME REPLACEMENT . I purchased them from Advance Auto because I had a good coupon, they were like $25 bucks and they seemed decent. Is it possible that Advance Auto will replace these for free? Any incite/tips/advice is appreciated!

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

All depends on how you drive, and considering they were $25 I'm not surprised they only lasted 20k. You might be able to get another set of pads from them

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

I had a coupon, they were originally $50 and the "platinum" are supposed to be the good quality, or so I thought ha.

I'm honestly not an aggressive driver at all. My friends make fun of me because I drive 65-70 on the highway, not 90. I do NOT speed up to stop signs or stop lights and slam on the brakes. I'm a very chill driver and I have a frugle mindset. I prefer efficiency over speed. I drive so my brakes and tires last as long as possible. I try to keep up with things in my car by myself to save costs, and I'm religous with maintenance because I want the best MPG I can get. Unfortunatley, I do live in a city, so I do a lot of city driving.

When I changed the brakes in 2019 I watched a ChrisFix video and many others including 8th Gen Honda civic videos. I am VERY OCD with my car and I thought I did everything correctly. I cleaned everything, wire brushed the dust and rust, and I lubed the guide pins, I think with Sil-Glyde (I tried to make sure I used stuff that wouldn't make the rubber swell). I changed the metal shims and lubricated the new shims and back of brake pads with anti-sieze.

I bled the brake lines with new DOT 3 in April, 2020. The brake fluid was dark, not too crazy black or anything, but now it's clear.

I was able to inspect the passenger front brake pads. They are wearing the same.

I think I might have found the culprit... both of the caliper guide pins on the passenger side are filthy. They slide, but the top one definitely has some resistance. There is a small rubber boot that connects to the head of the guide pin and also slides into the caliper. This boot was NOT fitted into the caliper. My thought: when I did the brake job in 2019, I attached the rubber boot to the pin and then pushed it in place. I had a really hard time fitting the rubber boot into the caliper. I think next time I should attach the rubber boot by itself to the caliper, then insert the guide pin and fit the boot to the pin. Right now, it looks like dirt is getting in because the boot is not seated properly into the caliper. It sticks to the pin, but the boot doesn't stay seated into the caliper.

Does that make sense? I also do see a tear in the piston rubber seal. What do you guys recommend? Should I try to clean everything up? or Should I buy new caliper pins and boots? New piston seals? Should I buy brand new calipers?

Unfortunately I live in the city where I do work in the street, so it's not easy for me to find a place to work on my car. I'll try to get back out there tomorrow to inspect the driver's side again, and see how bad the guide pins slide.

Thanks

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

Should the pin with the rubber tip bushing/sleeve be on the top or the bottom? Could that cause such wear? Looks like the guide pins' boots on the driver's side were attached to the caliper. The boots on the passenger side were only connected to the pin. There is 1 small slit on the driver's side dust cover and 2 small slits on the passenger dust cover.

I have attached some photos.

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

Those calipers are likely bad. With the cuts in the boot water gets in and corrodes the piston, eventually locking it up. Those boots for the slider pins need to be seated in the bracket and on the pin. Otherwise water will get in and begin to corrode things, eventually locking it up. Both can cause excessive brake wear.

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

Both sides (drivers side and passenger side) sets of brake pads have similar wear. Does this mean that both calipers are bad? Is it worth taking the piston out and putting new rubber dust cover seals in? Does the pin with the black tip go on the bottom or top? Would that have a big affect?

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

Cheap brakes dont last long. I bought my car new in 2006 (civic) automatic tranny. The first brakes wore out in 12k miles on front pads. The front calipers were bent from factory. I drove mostly highway. I had them bend the calipers back to straight and they did it even though they said its illegal. The next set of brakes were cheap and only lasted about 50k miles. The next set of pads are still on there from 65k to now at 129k. They are high end brakes and are barely showing wear. Ive had my rotors turned 3x and next time i will have to buy rotors. My rear shoes have only been replaced once at 80k miles.

Re: Premature brake pad wear?

I bought $50 dollar brake pads and got around 18,000 miles. How much should I be looking to spend on brake pads? I didn't realize I needed to spend so much on brake pads.

Does anyone know if the pin with the black rubber bushing tip goes on the top or the bottom??
