2014 Civic LX - Sudden Loss of Power Steering

Hi everyone - this is my first post here. I have a 2014 Civic LX automatic with 134,000 miles. The car is stock and has been very reliable overall.

Up until today, the steering felt normal. Then, just after making a right turn from a stop, the EPS light came on and the power steering stopped working at the same time. I didn’t hear or feel anything unusual when it happened - it was almost like the power steering was suddenly switched off.

When I got home, I restarted the car, but the EPS light was still on and the steering assist still wasn’t working. I tried again about an hour later with the same result.

For anyone who has dealt with a similar EPS issue on a Civic, what ended up being the cause?

Re: 2014 Civic LX - Sudden Loss of Power Steering

The mechanic said the power steering motor needs to be replaced. But because the power steering motor is built into the rack and pinion assembly and can't be had separately (or at least my mechanic can't get it separately) that means the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Part, labor and tax come to $2,300.

I brought the car home and will look into options. Maybe another mechanic can get the motor separately, or get a rebuilt rack and pinion.
