*TAKE OUT POWERSTEERING*
im thinkin of taking out the power steering on my 02 lx. cuz i drove my friend's hatch with the power steering off and it wasnt that bad. i know i'll get a lil more power cuz i'll lose a belt. for sure im keepin my A/C cuz it gets phuckin hot here in cali. has anyone done this? anything to watch out for?
If you don't mind it and think that it's worth it, then go for it. On cars without power steering it is hard to turn the vehicle until it gets going. I personally wouldn't do it, but it is your car.

Cars that are made without power steering are made free flowing enough that its drivable, hence they didn't put power steering. Trying to drive without power steering in car that has power steering is like nearly impossilbe. Just try coasting down a hil with your car off, and you'll see what I mean. The faster you're going the easier it will be to turn, but when you're barely moving on the flats like in traffic, slow corners, etc, it will be very difficult. You'd probably end up eventually crashing. Don't mess with it.

People who remove power steering on our cars are the people who are building their cars for the track. Cause on the track you only have to go one direction "STRAIGHT"!!
I think you will regret removing your PS.

i have mine out. belt, pump, lines, etc. it's harder than previous generations. what i did next was get fittings for the high pressure lines that ran to the steering rack, connected rubber hoses to it and T'ed it off with a breather. Once you get air going into the rack, it makes it easier. maintain some fluid in the rack to lubricate.
20/80 distribution??? is that supposed to mean weight distribution??? Our cars are closer to 60 F/ 40 R weight dist.... I don't have the exact numbers here with me, but its close to that.... and what does turning right have o\to do with anything??
PS: Removing Power Steering is a bad idea, enjoy parallel parking without power steering

I've done this mod too & LOVE it! It alows you to feel what the tires are doing on the road & enhances your driving experience a lot! If you really enjoy your driving, i would recomend it. Plus as your motor does not have to work power steering, it improves acceleration off the line (it's like removing the accessory pulleys) & frees a couple of horses.
It does get difficult to steer at low speeds (in town< 30mph) & parking is a nightmare!
But gives your arms a great work- out & i've become a parking expert now
I just pulled the belt out. I need to try what Roy did- maybe it'll make it less of a workout!

I'm guessing these people have done this for more performance... The one thing people are forgetting is that a car without power steering has been made to be without power steering. This being the case, they design the car so it takes more turns of the steering wheel to turn the tires (ex, suburban without power steering, is like 3-4 complete turns before you can't turn the wheel anymore) So, a car that normally has no power steering will be easier to turn than a car that had it, but was removed.
So, yes it will free up some hp, but probably not much, plus, you paid for it so you might as well use it. Lastly, your resale will go to ****, cause no one will want your civic over someone's with power steering. But, if it's something you wanna do... go ahead, just try turing your car without it being on.

you're looking at some serious problems w/ your car like that, I had a car that the power steering was off of for about 2 years (I felt there were other things I wanted to buy than a new belt, slacking is fun) and when i went to put the new belt on the seals had gone bad because of a lack of use. If the fluids are just sitting there, it's hard on hoses and especially seals. If the fluids are gone, it's deadly to seals. hehe, like dumping oil in the ocean, deadly to seals. sorry, lame I know, so I'm a lame slacker :P
Diemos,
the belts & spare tire are easy . The other stuff, i haven't done, but given the right tools & practice, it shouldn't take too much time. It'll make a tenth or 2 diff at most, in my estimate (which in a 1/4 mi is great!).
You should consider your wheels/ tires 1st. For race weekend, have a set of wheels/ tires [like Nitto 555 Rs (205/ 45/ 25") on 15" Racing Hart CP- 035s] that will have a WAY bigger impact.
(if you remove rotating masses, it is equivalet to 3 or 4 times the weight someplace else. Also reducing the wheel & tyre diameter improves your gearing for acceleration-
*Note* please do a trial run w/ this size. If you reduce the diameter, you reduce top speed. You want to make sure you are accelerating the whole time through your run & not reaching your max speed before you cmoplete your run. This works, but i haven't tried it on my civic & don't know anyone who has. It is car specific. Depends on the car's top speed & gearing)

yeah, if you only remove the belt, you should put it back on like every 3 months or so. to cycle the fluid. or you can do what i did. also, if you're looking to free up some power, this won't do much. i didn't notice much. however, i believe someone dyno'd an integra with ps on, and off. which was about a 3 hp free up. don't quote me on this though.
i dunno if u could hook it back up once u take it out, i suppose u could try without it and see if u like it?? i know it's prolly gonna be a bitch to take it out and put it back in but oh well, other than that, flip a coin??? hehe i have no clue. it's kinda like u wudnt know if u dun do it, but if u do it and u screw up it's gonna be bitch tho. so yeah good luck with deciding man =)
