Power steering leaking when front end is jacked up
Power steering leaking when front end is jacked up
I just finished a front brake job on my 06 Civic EX. I was taking my time and had the front end on jack stands for about a week. A few days in, I noticed two small puddles under the front end. My first thought was a brake line but it turned out to be power steering fluid - the reservoir was almost empty and when I topped it off, it resumed slowly leaking. Interestingly, the leak seems to have stopped since I put the front end back down last night. I did find this old thread about a similar issue with the 7th gen Civic, of leaking only when the front suspension is hanging. I can't tell where the leak is coming from - besides my unfamiliarity with the power steering system, the fluid did a good job of soaking a substantial area of the underside of the car, making it hard to pinpoint.
I'm interested to drive it a bit and see if the leak resumes, or if it really does only happen when it's on jack stands. However I'm afraid to turn on my car because there might be air in the system now...but it seems that bleeding the power steering usually involves raising the front end. Is it possible for me to bleed it with the front wheels on the ground? Maybe put a couple pieces of cardboard under them to reduce friction when turning? I'm feeling in over my head a bit and would appreciate advice. I'll probably take it to my mechanic but not before making sure I can start it without ruining the power steering pump and/or rack. I'm planning to sell this thing soon, the brake job was supposed to be the last part.
Thanks for any help!!

Re: Power steering leaking when front end is jacked up
Just turn the wheels back and forth a few times with the front end still up. Engine on or off. Top off as needed
