CVT holds too much fluid
CVT holds too much fluid
I have a 2015 EX with a CVT. I just changed the transmission fluid and filter. I had 4 quarts of Honda HCF2 fluid. I put in 3 (the owners manual says it holds 3.6 quarts) and then I had another guy start adding the 4th while I got underneath the car to watch for the fluid to start running out the overflow hole. I kept watching and then he said 'thats it'. He added the whole 4th quart and nothing ever came out the hole. So now I have 4 quarts of trans fluid in it. I changed the fluid in my driveway which appears to be level. So this morning I put the car in my garage which has a level floor. I pulled the 17mm drain plug out and still nothing came out. Can anyone tell me if this normal? I dont want to damage the transmission.
Re: CVT holds too much fluid
First things first. PThis is known as the CVT judder. Pick up Honda Genuine CVT fluid (NOT HCF2, byt the older version). Apparently Honda CVTs with starter clutches require fluid with friction properties different enough that it breaks all the multi vehicle fluids out there. Some will specifically state "not for Honda CVTs with starting clutch".
Had the same issue when I got mine and only the HG fluid made it go away. You might have to do it two times but luckily the drain plug makes it ten times simpler than most automatics where you have to drop the pan.
