Oil leak problem solved. Oil filter leaking bad. '07 Civic EX
Oil leak problem solved. '07 Civic EX 1.8 Liter VTEC, auto trans, 171k miles.
This is SO PERPLEXING to me. I've been doing car repairs for the past 48 years (since 1975). I have never in my life seen an oil filter leak like this!
The old (leaking) filter is on the left in the pic. For comparison, the new filter is on the right. The leaking filter was not damaged in any way, it was not loose. It was the correct filter for the engine. The old filter would leak about one drop per second any time the engine was running. 1 quart of oil every 30 minutes (miles) of driving!
I searched this forum and found nothing on this subject.
Any ideas?
Anyone ever have similar problems (with an explanation)?
Thanks,
Tim Barber
Old leaking OEM filter on left (no damage), new OEM filter on right.

Reason: clarification of title

I replaced the engine on a friend's '11 Civic. Rod knock due to a massive oil leak from the filter after an oil change. That was a bit more obvious though. Filter was way overtightened, gasket was ripped all the way around.

That's possible.
I concluded that I got a defective filter from my local Honda dealer.
I replaced the filter and the oil leak vanished.
I didn't examine the old filter. I was just happy the leak was finally FIXED! :-)
