Which direction to turn it?
Are there markings to watch out for to check for tdc positon?

1. Yes.
2. On the end of the crankshaft. Accessible from the wheel well, behind the fender liner. Should be left side (LHD drivers side). Should be a 17mm.
3. Clockwise.
4. Yes.
The 9th gen EX would have come with an R18 engine which sits on the passenger side (transmission on driver side). Slight edit to answer 2, but the other three are correct.
2. On the right side, behind the fender liner. The bolt has a 19mm head.
This pic is from the 8th gen Civic service manual, should give you an idea of what to look for.

What are you trying to do?
I'm trying to inspect the cylinders for any wear (smooth spots along the wall missing cross-hatches). The seller told me he changed oil about every 5000 miles. From the spotty service records I pieced together yesterday, it looked more like every 9,000 miles. The car has 110k miles.
I can't find anything in the 8th gen service manual. Is there any sort of arrow or mark on the timing chain cover that would line up with a mark on the crankshaft pulley?
Otherwise, just remove spark plug 1 and slide a long screwdriver in. Slowly rotate the crank clockwise until the screwdriver stops rising.
