Head gasket
Head gasket
I am new to all this so still trying to figure out how it all works. I bought a 2006 honda civic sedan 1.8 on Thursday to save some money on gas with all these crazy prices. Saturday was my first big trip with the car only driving about an hour away from home. About 45 mins from home it started over heating never to the red line but maybe 3/4 of the way up. So my question is did the guys before me know that the head gasket was going bad or not? My next question is since i have to put a new head gasket on it. What kind of things can i do while I have it apart? Mostly performance wise if anything. I don't know a whole lot about this motor.

Re: Head gasket
I really really hope not. At the same time I don't think it is. I did a compression test
cylinder one. 180
cylinder two. 130
cylinder three. 140
cylinder four. 150
All of my pressure is blowing back out the over flow. So im thinking the gasket is bad somewhere on the exhaust side between cylinder 2 and 3. Not getting any water in the oil and no white smoke out the exhaust

Re: Head gasket
Did you look at what Colin posted? A compression test isn't going to show the cracked block coolant leak. Read some of those threads then go look at your engine, you'll know for sure in 10 minutes.
Re: Head gasket
I just replaced head gasket on my '05 DX after coolant was being forced out of overflow bottle leading to overheating. If you do a leakdown test and coolant rises in radiator than you know either a head gasket, cylinder head, or block is bad. In my case it was a warped head and found that using a precision straight edge and verified by cylinder head shop who then shaved it flat. I also didn't have tailpipe smoke or coolant in oil. My radiator combustion gas test didn't detect gasses either but leakdown test confirmed bad news when coolant rose right up. In my case, after 20 minutes of idling in driveway continuous tiny bubbles appeared in radiator which is exhaust gases escaping into coolant passages. I did the head gasket job myself and used a Fel-Pro MLS which some say is better than OEM. Most likely your head gasket is bad or cylinder head is warped. I learned from youtube vids and asking questions here how to replace head gasket. Fortunately my 1st HG job is a success! Good Luck!!
