R18 Spark Plug Seals

I was changing the plugs in an '07 Civic EX with the 1.8L engine yesterday and one of the coils had a little engine oil on it and there was a little down in the well also but not much. The business side of the plug was clean with no oil deposits, as was the threads of the plug. So I don't think it's blow by. The question is where did the oil come from? The plug wells on this engine do NOT go through the valve cover. They sit in front of it and there is a rubber seal on bottom of the coils that seals the top of the plug wells. The wells themselves also have a lip that would prevent spillage from getting into the plug wells. The top of the wells do have a large hex on them so appears they may be removable, but none of the exploded views of the engine I've seen on various Honda parts websites show them as being removable and they don't show a seal. So I'm at a loss as to where the oil came from. Is there a seal underneath the tops of the plug wells and if so where can I find a part number for them?

The only other thing I can think of is perhaps someone removed the coil and intentionally poured oil into the spark plug well but surely not.

Spark plug wasn't installed tight enough to seal completely?

The plug was tight and it didn’t appear to be blow by. It was oil with the sane appearance as if it were on the dip stick not a gooey substance. I’ve found other threads with the same thing in this engine but no clear answers.

Re: R18 Spark Plug Seals

Clean it out, install and torque the spark plugs, go on about your life.
Recheck again some time in the future.

Re: R18 Spark Plug Seals

Any updates on this issue from this thread or related threads?

I also have a lot of oil in my spark plug wells with a cylinder misfire on my 2006 Honda Civic 1.8 L. Im going to try replacing the valve cover gasket, coils, and plugs. Can anyone update me on how this went with their cars?

Thanks a ton.

did you end up figuring out why this was happening because it’s happening to me but it’s only a little bit I would like to get ahead of this problem before it gets worse

As long as you have some DIY experience those are all easy to replace.
