Hybrid VTEC solenoid stuck behind throttle body
Hybrid VTEC solenoid stuck behind throttle body
I'm working on my brother's 2006 Hybrid Civic. It has 150k miles and is showing VTEC symptoms and codes (it won't even drive over 45mph on flat ground now).
On this car, it looks to me like the VTEC solenoid is on the front-right (180 degrees rotated from normal). For a picture, look at the front-right corner of the engine in this youtube preview ...or see the closeup in the video at 0:55.
Unfortunately, I can only get two of the 3 bolts out. The third one comes out a half-inch or so, then hits what I think is the throttle body. I think I read that if you take-out the throttle body, it needs to be reset at a dealer, so I'm a bit stuck.
I considered cutting the head of the 3rd VTEC bolt off with a hack saw blade, then removing the VTEC solenoid assembly, then removing the remainder of the bolt with vice grips. But then I'd need to put it back together using a shorter bolt, and hope that the two gaskets still seal (it sounds like they like to leak, even with normal torque).
EDIT - I just read that I may be able to reset the throttlebody position with a scanner; I have a CReader 126... I'll have to check if it has that function.

Re: Hybrid VTEC solenoid stuck behind throttle body
per http://ricksfreeautorepairadvice.com/honda-throttle-body-cleaning-reset/
Reinstall the Honda throttle body using a new gasket and torque to specifications. Now that the carbon buildup is gone, you must “teach” the computer where the fully closed position is. This is called a Honda throttle body relearn or Honda throttle body reset.
Shops perform a Honda throttle body reset with a scan tool, but you can perform it manually by following this procedure:
1) Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for 2-seconds. Do not start the engine.
2) Start the engine and run it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fans come on.
3) Then let the ending idle for five minutes with no loads (lights, heated seats, rear defogger, blower motor, radio, etc OFF)
4) After five minutes, shut off the engine.
...does that sound legit?
