clear coat failure
clear coat failure
I have a big problem with my carbon fiber hood. The clear coat started peeling in a small area in the middle of the hood, then it spread like a virus. Id say about half of it already came off. Wondering if i could just wet sand the rest of it off? It looks like there is another layer underneath, or is that resin? Is it possible just to wet sand and polish carbon fiber without getting it recleared? Thanks for any help
Im getting married in 2 months and buying a house shortly after, i was just wondering if i could just wet sand the rest of the clear off. Because it looks horrible right now and im gonna be short on cash for a while.
no no no no no!!! I thought you were going to wetsand it to repair it. If you sand all the clear off then your paint will be exposed to EVERYTHING and you will end of having to repaint the car. Just wait until you can do it right. You may try Meguiar ColorX, it will make it look a little better, but it wont look right.
I wouldnt leave this for much more time, and if at all possible cover your hood with something solid when its parked outside. UV from sunlight comprises the strength of the resin in carbon fiber, the clear coat on it should be clear coat that blocks UV rays but when it comes off its not going to be protected anymore. If you cant deal with it in a decent amount of time, id suggest you just get some srapy can primer and paint in on the hood, since that'll sand off easy when you get a chance to propreply clear coat it with clear coat that will protect it from UV. Sanding on carbon fiber is no problem just use small grit like they were suggesting. And make certain the clear coat you put on it eventually is UV protective.
