Ok, well it seems that someone keyed my car while it was parked in a lot, and I need some help on repairing the damage (its a pretty deep scratch). I first regular buffing compound (Turtle Wax) but all that did was destroy the clear coat finish. Today, I went to the dealer and got some touch-up paint, but it was really thick (plus its not water-based so you can't water it down to make it thinner) and dried very rough. I'd really appreciate any advice on this, because it really stands out and looks horrible. Thanks!
for deep scratches, the only way ive heard of fixing it so it looks good is to just get the whole thing sanded down, and just repaint. touch-up paint looks like crap imo, my friends dad's civic is ssm, and the touch up paint he bought at the hodna dealership looks horrible.
Touch up paint is OK for chips in the paint. It fills the hole pretty well and doesn't glob up too bad. Using touch up paint to cover key scratches will make it look even worse. My first suggestion would be to buff it out yourself. You did that and no luck. Looks like you are going to have to take it to a body shop and they will remove the existing paint and put a fresh coat on in order for it to look mint.
touchup paint is only really intended to prevent rust, its usually impossible to completely disguise a chip or scratch with touchup paint. Some places with actually airbrush paint to fill and blend the scratches. Its about 25$ and up for a rock chip, depending on the size and location of your scratches they may or may not still stand out. Id ask your local dealer who they use and at least have some pros look at it.
If the scratches are big the whole panel will have to be repainted. If you wanna do the job right they will also blend paint onto the touching panels and re-clear coat them so all the panels match.

i got a large scratch on my car the day i bought it
and when i went to wash i bought a rubbing compound from my honda dealer that works for filling in certain scratches and it worked really well for me. Dont know how it worked so well but i just basically washed my car and it came right out.
