non-VTEC engine to VTEC car

They use different O2 sensors, I believe the exhaust may be slightly different if I recall correctly. I know there's a thread somewhere that documents the swap.

Re: non-VTEC engine to VTEC car
I'm facing the same issue. Swapping a non VTEC engine into a VTEC (2003) civic
I thought I bought what I thought was a used VTEC engine but my mechanic (a friend) found out it doesn't have the oil solenoid for the VTEC.He says it's not a VTEC Engine.
He also said something about the solenoid holds the bracket that attaches to____ but that it's not an issue if I want to put this non VTEC engine in.
He didn't know if putting in this engine would cause a check engine light to come on.
I assume that would be due to an emissions issue.
Due to this I'm concerned if it was plugged in during inspection that it might fail the inspection. Any truth to this?
If/ when the Check Engine light will comes on will it stay on/ always be on?
It's a manual transmission.
As discussed above I could cruise at 80mph.
But "limp mode" would mean I wouldn't be able to accelerate and get the engine to go over over 3.5/4k rpm?
What is the "limp mpde" limiter?

Re: non-VTEC engine to VTEC car
You will have a check engine light because there is no vtec solenoid for the computer to activate.
Is your original head still good?
Why didn't you buy the proper engine?

Re: non-VTEC engine to VTEC car
Fwiw I pulled the head on this engine awhile back and had valve job done on it.
This head was installed on the current D17A2 last November.
The engine overheated about 4 weeks ago during a 40 mile trip on the interstate highway. Got off the exit and came to a red light. Engine stalled, tried to start it then saw steam coming from under the hood. Yup it had overheated. It wouldn't start after letting it cool down and adding coolant. Fwiw I couldn't see/ find a leak anywhere. All the hoses were intact, no coolant on the ground under the engine.
Got it towed to my mechanic. He said the head is likely bad, could be warped. Also that it might not have enough left to be milled down.
He mentioned the valves might make contact with the pistons if the head was milled.
Not sure but I think he had concerns about the block too. Could it be warped too?
Bottom line he didn't think it would be worth fixing it so I started looking for a new engine.
I thought I had but obviously didn't know what I was doing and/ or what to look for to confirm it was a VTEC.
I could have swore the yard I bought it from said it was a VTEC.
It came from a yard 25 miles away that I sourced off car-parts.com
I could return it or go ahead and have it put in. (depending on the implications)
Fwiw I considered buying a JDM engine, but was unsure if they were compatible.
Also what if any issues there would be to install one.

Re: non-VTEC engine to VTEC car
The JDM are D17A and have VTEC, they can be put in place of a D17A2.
Either return engine or get a non-VTEC ECU, keys that match, the ignition and the door locks, etc. Or just the ECU and be prepared to program the keys to the ECU.
returning the engine and getting a VTEC one is the most simple of all...

Re: non-VTEC engine to VTEC car
Yup time to return it.
I figured out why I thought it was a VTEC.
I searched car-parts and specified VTEC so the results that showed up I assumed were VTEC.
Seems the engine I got from the yard that had listed it on car-parts was not a VTEC though it showed up in the search.
