what should i do for boost
what should i do for boost
I Just got a 02 civic d17a1 and was wandering what to do when i wanted to run boost (such as ecus injectors ect) I know there is already so many threads but i have been looking and everyone has different answers and think they are professionals
Re: what should i do for boost
Im looking to push about 200-220 wheel with about 10-12 pounds of boost. should i spend the money and get the kpro kit or should i get a piggyback system
Re: what should i do for boost
Absolutely K-Pro, no question.
200whp is pushing what a stock D17 can handle. I probably wouldn’t bother building it though. That money would be better invested into swapping (in my opinion). The K-series VTEC engines almost make 200whp from factory, and they can handle a ton of power. Just some food for thought.

that's too much work for me right now im just trying to get a little more power with some boost. Im planning on buying a civic si next summer so im just looking to have fun with the d17. Its also super low miles only 67,000 and the motor is very healthy.

Just save your money. It’ll run you around $4000 that you won’t recoup, not to mention the fact that you’re grossly underestimating the work that goes into turbocharging. It’s really no easier than swapping.

8-10psi is about the most you can push on a stock block. 8psi for most, if you have a good tuner, then up to 10
RSX-S 310CC injectors should be able to handle that load. Anything higher, depending on the tuner, you'll need to up that flowrate. Consider retrofitting a return style fuel system with an FPR for higher fuel flow rates, and couple that with a walbro 255LPH pump
k-pro for sure. a piggyback can 1) only do so much and 2) the stock ECU will start to fight it at some point. There have been good results with the AEM F/IC, but it's still a piggyback at the end of the day. The tune will be the crux of your build. It will literally make or break your setup. You want a good tune, start from a good baseline.
If you can get ahold of a crower D17 cam, hop on that like stink on a monkey. At some point, you'll reach the limit of what you can do on the stock cam (really past 15-20psi), and a cam will be the breaking point of being able to produce power. At lower boost levels, you'll just get that much more power out of your build. Stage 1 is a drop in. Stage 2 and 3 you'll need valve springs and retainers, as well as a tune to support.
With the cam, you'll have to D17A2 head swap it. Def keep that -A1 bottom end since it's a lower CR (D17A1 has a 9.5:1, D17A2 has a 9.9:1. Lower CR means safer to run more boost). Either that, or look at some wiseco 8.8:1 pistons if you really wanna start building it.
lastly, don't cheap out. Buy quality/reputable products (not knockoffs or ebay specials). That's not to say you can't shop frugally. By all means find good deals. Just don't buy "GAREET" brand turbo off ebay or something stupid like that.
