Yea.. The key is chipped.. When I bought a new key, it cost me $35 at the dealership.. I guess there's supposed to be some sort of programming involved, but I had no problems using that key.. When I first got the car and test drove it, the dude told me that it was a chipped key and a replacement cost $120 with the programming.
I'd just go to the dealership and be like "I need a new key.. how much will it cost?"
edit: I have an 02 and its not laser cut, just chipped (transponder)

Well mine needs the chip to start. I got the el cheapo key made from the little guy outside of Sears, and it would fit and turn the car on, but not the engine. The fuel pump would never come on. My 2001 (EX) has an a RF key and I thought all did. When I installed my remote start as long as the key was close to the ignition, not in, but close, it would start. But if it was farther away, no go. That is a definate sign of RF there.
Anyways the el cheapo key didnt work so I went to Honda, and they told me $95 for the key, cutting, and programming it. I still just have my 1 key because I am too cheap to get the spare.

i tell u what, ill check my key tomorrow for a computer chip(my work has a computer chip checker for keys) and ill let u know tomorrow after work, but it was my impression that there was no chip in our keys
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
The 555I uses a unique auto program sequence to learn the secure code from the Key Cylinder Module and repeats it when remote start is activated, eliminating the need to leave a key in the vehicle.
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
will do, itd be a shock to me, ive never actually had a key made since i havent lost mine yet, but i work at walmart in the garage...(not for long, going to work for ford now) but we have a tester, ill check it tomorrow and let u guys know
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
might just need the vin code, should be able to program from that, but when i had my jeep the car had to be there so it could be programmed, and even then it was only like 65 at the stealership, however, i know my local true value can cut and program keys from vin numbers, so id call around b4 going to the stealership
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
Well the key ended up being 45 buck with tax and another 40 bucks to program the key. So thats how much the keys cost to program and buy, for everyone in the future to know.
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
Well our dealership sucks. I was sitting in the room the other day when they were doing the 80k checkup and some lady come in with an 05 CRV and wanted 1 new key. The key was $90 and the programming was a $95 fee! And the worst part... She paid it happily.
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
thats about right for keys, all hondas after 1998 have immobilizer chips in the keys. even valet keys. 2003 and up accords you can actually remove the chip and put it into another key. it cost so much bc we have to use the HDS tablet to regester the keys with the others. it take bout half and hour. aftermarket shops usually dont ahve access to the devices to program immobi systems.
Re: How much are 2001 civic keys?
A laser cut key does not mean chipped, they are two different things. '01-'02 have a traditional style key while '03-'05 have laser cut keys. However, '01-'05 are all chipped.
