2002 Civic EX Clutch Master Cylinder Removal

I'm attempting to remove the clutch master cylinder from my '02 Civic. As has been mentioned in other threads it is buried deep behind the strut tower. I've removed the clutch fluid reservoir and moved it to the side. I have a flare nut wrench to remove the solid line to the slave cylinder but I cannot get it on the nut. What's the best way to go about this? Thru the driver's side wheel well? Start removing things in the way (AC Lines, Brake Master Cylinder, etc.) until I can get a clean shot at it?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Re: 2002 Civic EX Clutch Master Cylinder Removal

I managed to remove/replace the master cylinder today. Long story short there isn't a nut you remove to disconnect the solid fluid line. There is a u-shaped clip. I was able to unbolt the cylinder from the firewall and pull it toward the front of the car and working in the driver's side wheel well with the wheel removed I removed the clip and the master cylinder easily separated from the solid line.

Installation was the reverse and with the exception of the old clip not wanting to fit into the new master cylinder wasn't too difficult to complete.

I still have no clutch pedal -- I'm hoping this is a bleeding issue. I worked on it for awhile with a hand held vacuum pump and I was able to move a fair amount of fluid thru the system. The fluid I captured in the bottle on the vacuum was very dirty. Hand pumping the pedal did not provide any firmness in the pedal. I plan to attempt more bleeding tomorrow.

The clutch in these Civics is known to be difficult to bleed. We always recommend unbolting the slave and getting it up as high as possible while bleeding.

pump the pedal a few times to learn what's inside a slave cylinder and how to reassemble all the pieces lol

Ok, get the slave up higher when bleeding with a vacuum pump to help get air out lol

Re: 2002 Civic EX Clutch Master Cylinder Removal

I'm still working on this in what little spare time I have. I put a clear tube on the bleeder nipple on the slave and filled it with brake fluid and ran it back to the master cylinder reservoir. When I have a helper slowly press the clutch pedal I consistently get 3 bubbles (big, smaller, small) that make their way into the tube. I'm thinking I must have a leak, seems to me the two most likely candidates are the slave cylinder and where the solid line goes into the master cylinder. I went to take off the slave cylinder and the fitting on the line into the slave cylinder is frozen. I've been thru several iterations of PB Blaster and I'm continuing to work on getting it loose.

Any ideas on why I still have air bubbles coming from and how to get this fitting loose?

Re: 2002 Civic EX Clutch Master Cylinder Removal

After copious amounts of PB Blaster and some patience with the 10mm flare nut wrench I've managed to remove the line from the slave cylinder. I'm glad I took my time with this instead of resorting to more drastic measures prematurely. No time to install the new cylinder now, but hopefully this weekend will provide me with an opportunity to install and bleed it.
