stiff shifter [solved]

2002 honda civic ex - automatic

Shifter is stiff after car parked for a few weeks. Any ideas on how to free it up?

Pull the cover and spray the slide with lubricant, perhaps.

dont hit anything electrical.

Thank you.

Tried that and it helped. There was white grease from factory that had dried out. Applied lithium grease, and hopefully it resolves the problem.

Had to replace the transmission shift cable and all the problems got resolved. The old cable was seized from years of salt and corrosion that seized the swivel end of the cable, which caused the problem.

My cable was completely seized and had to be replaced. But if someone is experiencing intermediate symptoms which is how the problem initially starts with vehicle not going into "P" (Park), the covers (2 of them at bottom of tranmission) can be taken off the cable to transmission and then spray it down with a good lubricant (Not WD 40) at the swivel joint. This will most likely solve the problem.
