Exclamation Weird Noise / Hard to use gear selector

Hi all,

I just bought a 2004 Civic and it makes this weird grinding sound when you release the clutch, it's also very hard to move the gear selector left to right but it moves fine up and down, are these 2 issues related to separate? The car has 161K miles.

Please see attached link to video of the noise

Re: Weird Noise / Hard to use gear selector

Noise is most likely the input shaft bearing, have to take the trans apart to fix. Gear selector might be the cables or maybe the shifter ball is split.

Re: Weird Noise / Hard to use gear selector

Thanks! I was looking at some bearing overhaul kits on Rockauto, the person I bought the car from said it was sitting for a few days and when he started it up a few days later that's when the gear selector was hard, we live in Boston, Mass could some rust build-up that quick? Should I put some PB blaster down in the cables? I would look into the shifter ball but like I said the gear selector was fine before the car sat for a few days.

If you believe that I have some beachfront property in Arizona you're going to want to look at.

All joking aside, rust build up isn't going to happen that fast, the seller might be telling the truth that it only started acting up recently, but I doubt it. Check the ball, check that the cables aren't getting hung up. Maybe someone else will have some other ideas

I’m new to the manual transmission side of the world so this might be a dumb question, is the shifter ball part of the gear selector or is that inside the tranny?

Ball is on the bottom of the gear stick, you'll have to pull some trim to look at it. Search the forum there should be a couple threads about the issue, might even be some pictures
