LX Civic Transmission

Hello all 👋 my transmission is showing signs of wear. My mechanic took a look and told me I should consider a rebuilt/reman replacement. Been hunting around salvage yards and found a 5spd manual for my car, but it’s the DX model. What are the differences, if any, between the VTEC/nonVTEC transmissions?

Re: LX Civic Transmission

They gearing is slightly different, but they’re basically the same

They’re straight swaps if that’s what you’re asking

Note: I’m assuming you’re comparing d17a1 and d17a2 transmissions. K-series (Ep3) transmissions will not work at all

Re: LX Civic Transmission

Do you have a VTEC motor (d17a2) or a non-vtec (d17a1)?

If you put a non VTEC trans in a VTEC car you acceleration with be slower.
You can put a VTEC trans in a non VTEC car and gain acceleration (I've done it)

Re: LX Civic Transmission

Yes mine is the D17A1. Gaining an acceleration boost would be awesome! Also-would the valve cover from the D17A2 be a direct swap too?

The valve covers are identical?

Re: LX Civic Transmission

All d-series engines are sohc. That said. The d17a2 is the vtec variation of the non-vtec d17a1

This, the only difference is the a2 head has the VTEC solenoid and the different camshaft and rocker assembly

Re: LX Civic Transmission

Well, there is one dohc d series, and it wouldn’t work. The d17 is a bit of a bastard child when it comes to other d series, because only d17 works with d17 (for the most part, there are some exceptions but they don’t have the cross-compatibility that the rest of the d series have)
