Shift solenoids failing only when hot
Shift solenoids failing only when hot
Has anyone else ran into this issue?
The car drives fine when cold, once warmed up (it's 100+ outside here this summer) it started surging when shifting into 3rd at first, then all gears. We let it cool off and it worked fine again.
We had the trans rebuilt at a brand name shop. All they did was toss clutches in and charge us 500% for the parts. On the way home the car got stuck in drive. (I can manually shift to 2nd) and I got a "P0974 – Shift solenoid A control circuit high" out of it.
I know from experience that wire wrapped around a core starts failing when hot first (like coils on an old Chevy) and this is all a solenoid is. So it's my opinion the shift solenoids need to be replaced.
PS It's a 2005 Honda CivicValue Package - L4 - 1.7L 1668cc GAS MFI type D17A1 - 4 valve SOHC with over 350k on it, single owner.

Re: Shift solenoids failing only when hot
Before putting money into shift solenoids, I would be shocked if that shop used actual Honda ATF..
Maybe it just needs a few drain and refills with quality fluid.

Has the shift solenoid screen (filter) been cleaned recently?
As Slumpert mentioned you may want to try a drain and fill. I usually do a 3x3 drain and fill (Google it). Honda ATF would be best but I have used Valvoline Maxlife (full synthetic) and Castrol MVI (synthetic blend) without issue on my previous 6th gen and in my mom's 7th gen. My mom's has ran on the Valvoline for over 30k miles.
I called both company's technical support prior to use and they varified there ATF will work for 6th & 7th gen Civics. Various forums also have positive results/reviews. The Valvoline Maxlife has a seal sweller in it and the Castrol does not.
