Stray Metal piece found in flywheel

Was hearing a noise coming from flywheel, opened the black flywheel cover where transmission meets the motor and this metal piece came out. Any idea what it could be from? Car seems to be running fine at the moment and the noise is gone just trying to figure out what's broke since I can't open the transmission myself. 02 manual civic

Re: Stray Metal piece found in flywheel

My first guess would be that broke off the throwout bearing.
My second guess would be it’s a shim from a aftermarket starter.

Neither would be of particular concern to me, but I would “verify” the starter is disengaging by briefly trying to start the car while it is running.

If you hear the starter gears grind, your fine, but if it’s quiet you should put get a new starter on your short list.

if it was one of the bearing hold tabs, when the other one breaks you will start hearing some really funky noises when the clutch is out and that whole bearing is spinning against the clutch fork.
