Need transmision! grrrr...
Need transmision! grrrr...
Hope I got the right forum here, haven't had time to really look around so...
We(well my dad, I'm the manager) own an auto body shop and car sales and buy wrecked cars from salvage auctions to fix up and sell.
So one day he comes in from the auction with a silver 01 civic coupe EX with manual trans on the trailer and i'm like that is mine. So we put the Rt Rear suspension in it, put a RT Rear quarter panel on it, fill the dents in the Rt door get it all fixed up and I pay for it. So now its all my baby.
well I start driving and there is a Horrible grinding in the trans whenever there is tension on it during accel or decell. So I take it down to our mechanic and he checks the lube, and that is good.
It's not the throw out or input bearings.
He told me its gonna need a trans, so for now I'll drive it till it breaks.
But should I put a used( checked www.car-part.com, not much there for Michigan) or a rebuilt, have mine rebuilt, or what other options are there???
Normally I wouldn't have any trouble choosing for work projects but I thought since you guys have more civic experience and I have to pay myself ya'll might be able to give me some good guidance. Or should I just sell it and find something else?

Re: Need transmision! grrrr...
Take it to a local mechanic you trust and diagnose the problem. If you have any wrenching skills at all or any access to a good shop you can at least pull the trans out yourself. Then take it to the shop and replace whatever is broken. Chances are it is a pretty cheap fix for the parts. The labor is what kills you on trans problems. A replacement trans is going to be pricey either way. Just do your best to get it diagnosed before you jump the gun.
Re: Need transmision! grrrr...
that's^^ what I did is take it to the shop/guy who does all our mechanic work for us at the body shop. He's quite popular in our county and very trustworthy. We do some mechanical stuff here but only light stuff not trans or engine stuff that all gets sublet to that guy.
He said it's either replace it or drive it till it breaks and replace it. He said the parts for the manual would be expensive and suggested putting in a used one.
Here's a link to a listing of all junk yards in Michigan that have a trans for my car. www.car-part.com 2001 civic ex MT
theres not much there to chose from. I have read enough about these civic trans to be leery of a used one tho...
