Manual Transmission oil leak. How to repare?

My manual tranny is leaking oil arouund the inboard joint. Is it difficult to replace the oil seal at this location? If any of you guys have a DIY on this, could you please post it?

Thanks

Thats probably going to be a fun one. My guess is you'll have to rip the tranny apart. Get a manual if you don't have one. I can't check mine for whats involved until I get home.

if the axle oil seal is leaking, it shouldnt be that hard. remove the axle, then remove the seal and install a new one.

I checked the manual, here's the page, its the only one relevant for any oil seals near the axles.

It started to leak after i had the clutch disk and pressure plate replaced. I guess it happened while the mechanic was removing the inboard joint. Maybe he did not pull it out straight causing the spindle to rub against the seal!!!

Thanks a lot man! Is it possible to remove the differential assembly without removing the whole transmission off the engine bay?

if thats the case, I would go back and try and see if he will replace it for you. Anytime a new axle is put in, it would probably be wise to replace the seal at the same time.

Yep, he damaged the seal. Have him replace it. They are surprisingly fragile as you insert the axle, but can last forever if you never touch them.

Is it possible to remove the differential cover without removing the entire transmission off the car?

If it's the case, it would be quite an easy job to replace the oil seal. Don't you think?

why not just remove the axle and pop theold seal out. that is usualy how the job is done. the manaul tends to tell you how to do things th long way. they make special tools and seal removal tools for the job. not sure if the housing itself comes apart. it probably does, but not sure.

Naa... the seal pops right out. You use a hook and just pull it out. Or a careful pry with a big screwdriver. Then just tap (gently) the new one in with a big socket to keep it square. It takes 2 minutes with the axle out.
