Son has a 2005 Honda Civic LX sedan 4 cylinder. About a month ago the radiator cracked and I replaced the radiator, thermostat, both hoses, and temperature sensor. Car has been running good for about a month and today he overheated in mountains. I used Preston’s 50/50 when I filled it back up btw.
he managed to get car home and he tooled pics showing that he had a massive initial leak in the front passenger engine compartment, looks to be around thermostat housing. I filled it up and we drove it around for about 20 minutes and finally got it to overheat at home but I could not find any leaks. I’m thinking water pump but I do not see any signs of leaking by the timing cover. I’ve been told it could be a head gasket too but I did check oil and it does not appear to have any water or coolant in oil.
in the morning I plan to start car with radiator cap off to see if coolant will circulate once tstat opens to let me know if the pump is circulating fluid. I’m somewhat perplexed on how coolant went everywhere but I can’t replicate the leak.
I am seeking advice on how to tackle this, thanks 100!!
note - the video have the sureway to check the gasket in these engines.
It's simple.
Don't waste time or money doing something different.
We created a section on the forums specifically for these D17 engines overheating because it is different than other engines and quite common.
I replaced the gasket on mine around 95k miles, did not think twice. To be honest, if the overflow reservoir is full, that is the only clue you need. I did not do the test, I knew the gasket is the culprit
