White smoke after replacing alternator
Hi Everyone,
I have a 2004 Civic, I just finished replacing the alternator. I reconnected the battery and started it up to test it and have a small amount of white smoke about 20 second later although it seems to be coming from the exhaust on the left side of the alternator. I do get an odd burning smell but can't identify it. Both of the belts on the right side are turning.
I had all the classic signs of a bad alternator when it went out, flickering headlights, incorrect readings on the voltmeter, failing to charge the battery, etc. I don't believe anything was wrong with any other part of the engine but I suppose it's possible.
It was the original alternator, so I had to use PB penetrating spray on almost every bolt since some had never been removed. I tried to be careful with shop rags but there is no doubt that penetrating spray and WD-40 have sprayed on things it shouldn't have.
As a girl, this was a major feat to replace this alternator, so I am going to go cry for a hour, eat some ice cream and then will be back later to see if you have ideas..
What could I have screwed up? How do I test it and how much do I need to worry about the car starting on fire while I try to diagnose my problem?
Thank you so much for any insights you can offer.

Re: White smoke after replacing alternator
Is it better to burn it a few minutes at a time or one longer session? How long would you guess it would take to burn off?
Should I check anything electrical before attempting a burn off session? Will I need a fire extinguisher handy?
And...thank you kind internet stranger for replying.
