I have a 2002 civic ex I just got for work. I changed the belts and now I have smoke coming from the belt area. No noise just smoke. It did have an extensive oil leak that required a new valve cover gasket. Oil leaked everywhere for awhile before I got it.
@Chezboat24 hey thanks for the advise sometimes I tent to over think things making them worse then they really are. After pulling things off again and adjusting both belts 2 more times, I stopped and looked at how extensive the previous owners oil leak really was and noticed it down the back and side of the engine where the belts are. So I just let it run after about 3-5 minutes or so the smoke started to disappear and it actually runs really well. Thanks again
Maybe I spoke to soon. It ran great when I first took it around the block. Now my girlfriend went to drive it and smoke coming from muffler. Maybe it was worse then I had initially thought. I'm heading back to the house now hopefully have an update
Just got home and fired it up. I let it run to see how long it would last. A few times it sounded like the motor was gonna die. But it didn't once it warmed up the motor sounded good. ABS light is on so I put the scan tool on it and checked abs but no dtc for it. So I hit erase codes. It said to turn off engine then restart it. Upon restarting it wouldn't start like as if the battery was dead. Any idea?
The car is a mystery, I love it. Disregard the last. It's 538am on Tuesday in Indianapolis and before I left for work this morning I jumped the Honda bc it died yesterday on me. Fired right up and no smoke from belts or engine none even from the tailpipe.at all. And let it run for about 15-20 minutes
@Chezboat24 I apologize for bothering you again but it is still a mystery to me. I myself always had an f150 so I get that but this civic i feel like I'm over looking g something. As I last stated it ran ran great well I came home today it's 77 in Indy so I thought Id go for a ride. Let the car warm up for about 15 minutes. Had the initial smoke from the oil leak and a rough start but was fine. As soon as I pulled out and got about 150 ft from my driveway it began smoking again.from the hood and tail pipe.white smoke not sweet and didn't smell like burnt wires or anything like that. Opened up the hood again looked like power steering was bubbling,
battery light was flashing and oil light came on. Initially I changed the valve cover gasket and cam shaft seal plug bc that's where I seen it leaking from and then added 5 quarts pf oil and then drained a quart and a half out once I realized it was only 3.7 quarts required. When I'm driving it or hitting the gas the temperature goes up 205 was the highest it didn't do that the other day when I would step on the gas. Qnd I adjusted the belts to about a quarter inch of play. Blown head
Still no dtc's, used to different scan tools and they shoe nothing. And the battery is constantly draining. I charged it. It was at 12.3 volts, put it back in the car by the time I drove the short distance and back and parked it the battery died within minutes
clean the engine, find the leak
the battery light might be the belt oiled up and it is slipping.
check if the oil filter does not have two seals
the smoke will not show up in the scanner
If the power steering fluid is aerated (bubbling) there is usually a leak somewhere on the suction side. Sucks in air and aerates the fluid. You need to fix the leak, then completely drain/flush the old fluid with new.
@BrotatoChip thanks for the advise did that. And the alternator was bad so replaced it with a new one this evening. Now the lights draw dim and the first 2 times it wanted to start but now acts as if it's dead. Battery level still at 11.9 though on the multimeter. I had to change the ELD when I first got it don't knownif that can cause this effect or not
Update new alternator and everything ran great driving around d the city. Went to take it on a country road and get it up above 40 and it won't barely any tranny fluid in there. Do I have to use the Honda Trans fluid, if so what kind and autozone has others that say will fit can I use them instead

I was looking thru other post on the forum and I seen one that was labeled "POOR PERFORMANCE/LIMP MODE-SOLVED" @sdaidoji was commenting on it.. but the guy had same problem I think. He couldn't get it to hit 40 unless going downhill. From what I read and took from it that a catalytic converter was blocked keeping it from nkt reaching 40mph. Can that be a thought or different issue? Thanks for all the help. It is greatly appreciated from you guys.

@Chezboat24 I did the 3 times drain and fill over the past 5 days or so. And was driving it. Today took it on the highway. It runs great what a big difference thanks for the advise. Thank you everyone for taking the time to look at this thread and have an input
And back to square 1 again. My step daughter was out driving it qnd called and said it wouldn't accelerate. So I'm back to the same issue again. Can there be a leak in the transmission fluid? I never noticed any leaking before other then the oil
I understand you can't tell me if it's leaking your not physically here. Just wondering if you had an idea. But I figured it out tiny pin hole leak in the line. Thanks guys
