Compression on a 2003 with 240k miles

I did a compression test (just dry no wet test) on a 2003 with 240k miles.
All four cylinders were at 200 psi
Did a similar test on a 2008 with 123K miles and it too was 200 psi in all four.
Not sure what I was expecting but I was surprised the '03 with 240K was the same as the '08 with 123K.
Thoughts? Impressions?

If the engine was well maintained then that's expected

I’d definitely assume some compression tester error (I don’t think either of them made 200psi from factory) but it’s a good benchmark to see the engines are in good shape (consistent numbers all around, but I’d guess it’s closer to 160-170 which is still very good).

Enough carbon buildup on the Pistons would actually boost compression a bit. Wouldn’t shock me if that’s what’s happened with the ‘03

That’s Interesting. Never heard about carbon build up having that affect but it makes sense.
I have a couple of other compression gauges/ testers. I’ll try those and see what happens. I still have access to the 2008.

Re: Compression on a 2003 with 240k miles

Mind you, the increase would be unsubstantial, but it’s an idea. I would think it’s more likely to be an engine that was either replaced or disassembled (head gasket for example)

My ‘01 was relatively well maintained but made like 120psi per cylinder when I sold it (200k-ish miles) so maybe I’m just bitter mine was a POS

Re: Compression on a 2003 with 240k miles

I have an '05 EX and my compression numbers were between 173 and 200 psi. My mileage is lower (150K when tested), but it shows that the compression of these engines can get that high.
