Strange crack found on cylinder head cover

Strange crack found on cylinder head cover
I circled the cracked spot in the photo below. I don't know how long this has been there. What could cause this? What problems does it indicate?
It's a 2002 Honda Civic LX automatic sedan. The car drives fine--about 60 miles on the freeway daily on weekdays.

Is it a crack or just paint pealing?

as long as it doesn't leak oil, you'll be fine. If it leaks fill it with jb weld or replace the valve cover.

Does the cylinder head cover come painted from the factory? I've never had it painted.
