Werid noises and a stall. Fun
Werid noises and a stall. Fun
Car been acting werid all day. Got a 03 civic ex that was making subtle rattling noises all day. Didn't know what is wrong and still don't know. But it gets worse. Rattling noises sounds like a paper going into a fan at first. Then it gets worse. Sounds like a wire being spun around and hitting everything. Soon after it went from fan paper to wire tornado the car stalls and two lights come on immediately. Thc oil light and the battery light. Check engine did not come on and is still not on. Tried to crank and it turns over except the engine shakes and the wire tornado is worse. Not daring to start it again. Although it can run, tow guy drove it like 10 feet. Runs fine except for the massive rattle. It's home now and tow guy thinks it may be a belt that's in not good condition. Any advice on what it could be. It's sitting on the road rn and the latest I can check it is in the morning. As a side note, I check oil and it was fine. My headlights are on as it is night time so I am not sure why those lights came on. Please help!!!

Yup did that tonight. Everything looked fine. I'm just wondering what it could possibly be. What should I look for is what I'm asking, I'm not sure what it could be
Re: Werid noises and a stall. Fun
Try removing the tension from the belts and seeing if the noise stops. All-in, it should take a little over an hour.
It’ll be 2 belts if I recall correctly; AC/PS, and then alternator

Loose to the point where the belts won’t rotate with the pulley. The alternator belt is a bit of a pain in the *** to attach so I usually just let it sit loosely on top.
Re: Werid noises and a stall. Fun
Right ok. Just making sure so I don't **** something up. You want me to loosen both belts and have it so that it won't turn. Then try to start the car. Wouldn't it not work cuz the serpentine belt won't move or sum.
Re: Werid noises and a stall. Fun
The timing belt runs the car, not the serpentine belt. It has no bearing on the car running, with the exception that the battery will eventually die and the car will subsequently shut off.
If you’re more comfortable with it, just take the belts off entirely.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. The big one spins, but it sounds painful.

well...
something got bent, or out of place, or loose.
Something moving is touch things it should not, or vibrations are making sheet metal squeaky against each pother.
If you can't find it visually now... Then it's likely hidden.
First suspect is timing belt, so you will need to remove the covers.

It's getting late so I'll get the covers off tmmr. On the bright side I got some belts to replace the ones I took out. If something is bent. What's the possiblity it could be fixed.

i would first pull of the cover to the timing belt - tension could be goner.
description of the noise could be a shredded timing belt also, flapping and hitting the cover

Aw man. I spent all day on it. Timing belt is new. It's a new kit so new tensioner, water pump and belt. Previous owner changed it before we bought it. I didn't even get to use my kit. But the issue is not the timing. Mechanic neighbor came and looked at it and said timing was good. He thinks it may be transmission, as when I showed him the video he heard metal on metal. His advice is to remove the starter and see the condition of it's teeth. What are your guys input?

welll, at least you do know that the timing belt is good and how new it is.
Yes, I agree it's metal on metal noise. Do not sound like engine noises though.
He might be right

Two quick bolts later I got the starter off. I took a video of how it looks because idk how it should look. I looked inside the the slot/hole that the starter goes into and saw well look at the video. What of it?

Re: Werid noises and a stall. Fun
there might be some pieces of something rattling around the flywheel.
bad news is you will need to remove the transmission just to find out if that is the case or not.

Im not sure if it's clear the audio on this video. But it seems to be stuff in some areas and then smooths out in some. Not sure if that's normal. I'm getting a few more tools and then I'm going to try to pull the trans.
