Fuel leakage

Hi all.
(Honda civic, 2004, auto)

I’ve never been more confused. I topped up the fuel, nearly full tank. I drove about 15min to the shop, as I was walking back up to the car I spotted a large puddle that looked like petrol (it was raining so was very obvious what colour the fluid was - pretty sure it’s fuel).
I got in a car drove back home. Parked the car, straight away see a same iridescent puddle under my car and a trail of spots on the road where I was parallel parking.
The fuel indicator showed there was only a bit more than half a tank left (which is way too much for the journey I made).

Haven’t drove the car for 24 hours and just went to have a look. No obvious signs of leakage at this point. Put the key in ignition and the fuel indicator shows about 75% full.

I am very confused as to why the fuel indicator is showing more fuel today than to yesterday and obviously I am concerned about the actual fuel leak. Should I just go for it and drive it before I get it properly checked out or could it be something very minor that’s quite common? Or maybe something that would be expected after just topping up the fuel?
Like I said the weather was very wet so the puddles might have looked like huge puddles of petrol when in reality it might have been just a few drops.

many thanks

Re: Fuel leakage

In all honesty I did not smell anything, but I wasn’t really leaning over the puddle to smell it. When I had a brief look under the car I didn’t smell anything either. I did however smell fuel in my car while driving a few days earlier but it literally stopped within a minute so didn’t think anything of it.

Re: Fuel leakage

first, check if it is really fuel.
second, inclines affect the fuel gauge (not in the quarter differences, mind you)

Re: Fuel leakage

Check for cracks in the top of the sending unit, I think the tank is plastic on 7th gens, if it's steel check for it leaking at the seam halfway up the tank
