Hi everyone, I'm a new poster to the forums but I've been on here for a while looking at other peoples posts for how to fix my various civics over the years. I've had a problem recently, so lets start:

2003 EX manual, I was driving home from the store at highway speeds (65'ish for about 10 min) then at the end of the off ramp I noticed the engine had died and RPM had gone down to 0. There was no shuddering or anything crazy besides the simple fact that it shut off. Tried to start again and heard a "whirring" sound. Didn't sound like bad starter but once I was able to get it pushed to a parking lot I attempted a rolling start. Same lower whining sound. She's got 230k miles and an oil leak that I didn't think was THAT bad, but maybe it's more serious? Also, I've had to tap the starter solenoid maybe 1 out of every 20 starts to get it started. Where do I start (once I get it back to my house :P) oh wise civic guru's!?!?

Sounds to me like a snapped timing belt. Send a video if you wouldn’t mind so we can confirm.

Yeah whirring sound is not good, pop the upper timing cover off and see if the belt is snapped. If it's not snapped check if the engine is in time
