D17A2 died, how to diagnose troble

2002 Civic EX 2-Door Coupe, 1.7L SOHC L4 5-Speed Manual
Died on road.
Starter cranks engine fine
Carb cleaner sprayed down it's throat when cranking does not fire, so probably not a fuel issue.
How to test spark and/or compression?
remove sparkplug and screw in compression tester?
how to check timing?

Re: D17A2 died, how to diagnose troble

First, try cranking it with the gas pedal depressed all the way. This will disable the injectors and allow the maximum amount of air into the cylinders.. to resolve a flooded cylinder(s). If that doesn't get the engine running then check spark.

Have a helper crank the engine while you one by one slowly and slightly lift each coil pack off of the respective spark plug. Only lift it about a half inch off the plug and you should be able to hear spark while engine is cranking
