Engine almost stalls for no reason... any ideas?
So my 2002 Civic Coupe EX 5MT that I've owned since 2002 and which has been pretty rock solid (various repairs/replacement parts over the past 17 years but nothing major) has started to have some problems recently.
Basically, the car will not respond to the gas pedal being pressed and will kind of "shudder" a little bit and almost stall until I press the clutch to keep it from stalling. Pressing the gas pedal doesn't seem to do anything (engine doesn't rev when the clutch is pressed and no response when I let go of the clutch and press on the gas either). After a minute or so of this it eventually responds to the gas pedal (but I press it more than usual) and then it starts moving again. It will do that typically (only?) in low gear, like 1st usually, at low speed and usually relatively soon after starting to drive (within 15 min I would guess). Often would happen when I'm driving around the parking lot. It may do this one or two times before it seems to have "recovered" and doesn't become an issue again during that drive. It doesn't always happen but more times than not. I don't drive it much these days (few times a month) but the battery is fine, the gas was more than half filled, and it's never done it before a few months ago.
Wondering if this sounds like a known type of mechanical or engine issue and if I need to take it to the dealer to get checked out. I've always been diligent about getting the regular maintenance work done (always at a Honda dealer) over the years and had the timing belt and spark plugs (I'm just throwing it out there since I have no idea what's going on) replaced in the last 20k miles or so. Mileage is only around 136k or so.

Re: Engine almost stalls for no reason... any ideas?
Thanks, I'll have to check but I think it is. Not sure how to check it myself, what device would I need? I should probably just get it checked out when I take it to the dealer for the recent airbag recall although it would be nice to avoid some of the initial diagnostic steps to save $$..

If there is an Autozone or similar parts store near you they will usually read codes for free. There is also a way to read codes by jumping pins 4 and 9 in the DLC then counting how many times the engine light flashes. Post #4 on the below thread has instructions for this.

Thanks! I'll try Autozone to see if they can check the codes (through the ODBII port?), otherwise I'll see if the dealer can check it out. It hasn't happened the last couple times I've driven the Civic (including tonight) but for a while it was fairly consistent (and almost died on me in traffic once, so I'll want to figure out what's going on at some point).
