head gasket or cracked head ?

Is there a way to tell the difference between a cracked head or a blown head gasket without taking the head off?

Re: head gasket or cracked head ?

If the head is cracked, which is rare on a D series, it usually would occur around the spark plug hole and valve holes.

The aluminum is too thick elsewhere to normally crack, but if it was run without oil and coolant and got super hot to point it stopped running and then you submerged it into sub zero salt water.. Just saying it would take a huge thermal shock to crack that hunk of aluminum.

Now warping / distortion can happen easily..

TY Slumpertcivic. That does sort of elevate my mood. Normally I would jump out there and yank the head for a new head gasket. But as I'm now dragging around an oxygen bottle due to severe COPD I'm going to try bars leak head gasket sealer. In my mind I'm thinking, if it works well great, if not well I already got problems anyway.

Do not use stop leak, it will only cause further problems

Maybe so. If it doesn't work, well I was gonna have to take it apart anyway. I may get lucky get once. I know the right thing to do but with this copd it would take me a week or more to do the head gasket. I have heard of Bar's Leak working.

History shows us a blown head gasket is pretty routine, along with anything that happens after the engine gets overheated (warped head, etc).
Cracking a head would be quite unusual.

The only possible way that stuff could work would be if you pulled the spark plugs out and poured it in the cylinders directly.

For the love of your engine and coolant system and heater core, do not use it on a Honda engine.

How far can you go from a coolant fill up till it starts getting to overheat range? Some people can just add water once week or so.

Re: head gasket or cracked head ?

Head gasket sealers can potentially clog radiator and heater core. If the engine overheated then the head is most likely warped out of spec and no amount of stop leak is going to solve that issue.
