Leaking oil, what is this

New to working on my civic, know and work on early 90 jeeps. It is a 03 LX with a 1.7 L SOHC , standard trans. It is leaking from the round black "plug" in the picture. I am looking to see what that is so I can start researching how to fix it. Thank you for any help, kyle

When they machined the head, that was access for the tooling. Pretty sure it is just a plug. However, think you will need to pull valve cover to replace it. If all it is doing is seeping, and not dripping, just wipe it off. They usually do that. I always put just a light film of RTV gray sealer on the inner lip. Usually, the are only like a half moon in the head on older Civics and most Toyota's. I bet if you wipe up what oil you see, it may not be leaking as bad as it looks. However, it a easy fix if it is dripping. There is one in the back also. Could be the half moon one I mentioned.

Update..appears they have changed the design. In the fish, that appears to just pop out. In the OD of it is an o-ring. You should be able to replace the o-ring and snap it back in there. I do not have a service manual but was look in my 2006 Civic one and College Honda on line fish.

Re: Leaking oil, what is this

it is just a plug to cover the hole where a distributor would normally be,

you dont have to remove the valve cover to replace it, but i would, along with the valve cover gasket

You should be able to replace the o-ring
Honda sells the whole plastic plug with the O ring, it's less than ten bucks.

Honda part number 12513-P72-003,
USD $8.77 MSRP, (cheaper online).

As Ezone says, buy the whole plug, it comes with the O ring. You may find that once you start to remove that plug, it is brittle and breaks apart. Better to be safe than sorry.

You should replace the EGR gasket as well. It was less than $2. But I do not see it in your pic. I am new to Civic's so maybe its a different version.

The A1 as his LX has doesn't have it there like our A2s do.
