Timing belt DIY/ TDC question
Timing belt DIY/ TDC question
Hello all,
I'm currently changing the timing belt,h2o pump, etc on my 02 Civic, 1.7 engine.
This is my third timing belt change, but first on a Civic.
I may need to kick myself in the butt for this one. The crank and cam was maybe a couple of teeth off, but not more, when I removed the timing belt. So not quite at TDC. At the time the marking on the oil pump case was covered in grease and I put the UP on the cam at 12 o clock. Realizing after I got the belt off that I wasn't paying very close attention to this detail.
Question:Can I just gently bring the camshaft and crank to TDC? Again the belt is off. Logic tells me I can, but I have been wrong before.......
Also, everything I read suggests that turning the crank or cam anything but counter clockwise will damage the valves and possibly open a portal straight to the underworld. I'm sure this is the case with the belt ON. What about in this situation with the belt off? Counterclockwise only?
Thanks!!!!!!

Re: Timing belt DIY/ TDC question
I've had that happen before.. Actually ran my car with the timing off 1-2 teeth. Just saw a shitty fuel economy.. Can't say that those results will be typical, but if you need to rotate the cam gear instead, then I'd do that
The way I align the crank pulley to TDC now is by temporarily installing the lower timing cover and using the tick marks on the pulley with the indicator bit on the lower cover.. It hasn't failed me yet
