2 CEL codes, Help.

I have read a lot of post and still didn't answer my question, so those who wanna say keep looking and searching I have and still am, anyway here is the info on the car. It's a 2002 civic ex coupe, it's got 126k miles and some know mods and injen CAI, Megan headers and from them exhaust all the way back (with resonator).

Now the issue is the check engine light with 2 codes, one is for egr (autoZone tech said to pull it off and clean it) the second one is for the knock sensor malfunction, the question is where is it located I have looked around online a lot but couldn't find a direct 100% answer on the location or description, would like to get this done ASAP because I need to pass DEQ so any tips will be appreciated.

Ps. Could the knock sensor cause the egr code or the other way around? Could they be connected in anyway? I'm not too inclined in engine mechanics but I can do something.

1st code is P1491 (connector was not connected) but connected it and it still came up, I'll check it again later,
2nd code is P1324 gonna locate it pull it and see.

Suggestions please welcome please!!!!!

If you're looking up at your oil filter you'll see the oil pressure switch above the filter, then to the left, above the metal coolant pipe you'll see the knock sensor. There's a bolt going through it to attach it to the block. It's kind of a PITA to get too.

Sensor looks like this.

I could see the black wire sheath, just above the breather cover.

P1491 is EGR valve insufficient lift.
P1324 is Knock Sensor power source circuit low voltage.

"Unplugged" certainly explains the codes.
Who left them unplugged? What else was left undone?

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

Quick update, CEL light was off for about 5miles, or so then came back on with the same egr code, so how often does the egr valve go bad? Common problem? Why would someone unplug the two?

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

I guess I would be checking if the problem is the valve itself, or if there is some issue with the wiring or something.
I can do a lot with a good scanner, or even a DVOM and some jumper wires.

Any "greenies" on any of the wire terminals--from being exposed to the weather?

EGR valve actually bad? It happens once in a while, but I haven't seen it often enough on Civics to just throw a new one at it and be confident without doing some testing first.

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

Someone told me to take it off and clean it because they get greasy, so that shouldn't be too big of an issue but it's hard as hell to get to the two bolts, I got one off but the one that's close to the connector is stripped really badly, any tips on getting that off? (I even tried to hammer on a smaller socket on to it and pushing down on the bolt when I try to spin it, it still strips and spins off) is there a special tool or like a socket clamp of some sort out there to buy

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

6 point box-end wrench?
"S" wrench?
Offset box?
Vise-Grips?
Bend your own?

Hammer and chisel?

I actually have a unique 12mm tool that was originally intended for accessing a nut on a carb on an RX-7. Works great on these EGR valves. Very similar to a distributor wrench for older American V-8s.

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

Never seen a wrench like that before, but I don't think it would work, I am gonna try to pick up one of those adapters for socket wrench that allows you to change angles

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

So took egr valve off and cleaned it as much as I could, even the two small openings and swapped gaskets about 5 miles after CEL comes back on and same code P1491 should my next step be getting a new egr valve? And what are the odds that it won't clog up just as fast and the issue is with the system and not the valve?

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

Clogged passages will give a P0401 code for insufficient flow, or cause misfire codes, or could be odd fuel trim codes, and a few others.

The P1491 set because the PCM did not see the desired voltage from the position sensor when it activated the valve.

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

Yeah, I'd guess the valve itself is next to replace.

Makes sense, will do that next and will write update on it when I'm done

Re: 2 CEL codes, Help.

So I went out and bout a very low mileaged egr valve and swapped them out, and changed the gasket, and so far no CEL light, it's been a bit over 1miles, either the old one the light came back with under 5k miles. Will update at 50 if it doesn't come up by then.
