02 Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank1 Sensor2

I've been getting this code lately on my 05 Civic Dx.
My mom (who gave me the car) says it turns on often - but she has never really looked into it. And me, a first time car owner, is slightly freaked out (I know, it's only a check engine light on an older car... but still).

Can anyone tell me what this really means, if I need to fix it, and how one would approach fixing it.

the oxygen sensor is in the exhaust pipe and tells the main computer how the engine is running. while the sensor is important for real time fuel corrections and engine performance, it will not make or break the car. worse case is you lose a few mpg compared to a new sensor. what happens when they get old is the response time drops and triggers the engine light. I personally would get it changed for the car to drive its best and give good fuel economy. unfortunately for you, honda switched to the expensive wideband sensor for 04-05 civics thats costs around $250 just for the part instead of the old narrowbands that went for $50. labor to change should be less than an hour since its in an easy area. there is no hurry to change it, but you should do it eventually. i would stick with the honda sensor too, not aftermarket. if you are good with cars, look up and order the sensor from www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and install it yourself. its very easy to swap with a few simple hand tools. kinda like replacing a spark plug on the outside of the engine.

Hey, I've been getting this code too and bought a $50 Denso from Rock Auto.
Even though RA said it was for 2004-2005.
Code came back after a few miles.

Does this mean I need to shell-out the big bucks for a wideband sensor?

Why the hell would they sell narrowband to us if they don't work in the later generations.

ive been hearing quite a bit of unhappy customer stories about rock auto lately. including the wrong sensor being in the box for the narrowband version. but yes, you need the expensive wideband. all 04-05 every model came with a wideband. 01-03 uses the cheaper narrowband.

Strange, you would think they would specify right on the sensor somewhere if it were narrow or wide-band.

I'll try a used one before I toss at least $150 for a new one, but thanks for the info!

You can't tell unless they specifically say wide-band for 2004-2005. AND they're not gonna be cheap.

Well, I don't have access to a scan tool, but I did try to simulate a YouTube video with multimeter and propane torch to replicate that diagnosis. Didn't seem like I could find the right wires to test, gave up pretty quickly.
